Handel - Esther (HWV 50A)

Wandsworth Street Concerts 2022 - Finale

We close the 2022 series with Handel's first Biblical epic, Handel's Esther (1720). Originally titled, 'The Oratorium', it is the sister piece to 'Acis & Galatea', which composed in the same year and with the similar sounding title, 'The Pastoral', and brought Handel oratorio fame on its revival at the Haymarket Theatre in 1732.

Containing ravishing arias and glorious choruses, Esther demonstrates Handel's transition from the chamber music style to the English regal baroque made famous by the Coronation Anthems and Messiah.
